Eiderdown Duvets
A family heirloom
Here at Skalanes we have genuine eiderdown duvets for sale, which are made in a limited quantity each year. Eider down is a valuable natural product collected from wild birds in a symbiotic relationship between duck and human. Eider farming is a long-standing Icelandic tradition, whereby wild Eider ducks (Somateria mollissima) naturally congregate near farmsteads in order to breed, in the knowledge that the farmers will protect them from predators.
Our colony of around 550 breeding females is centered to the north east of the house with the ducks nesting only meters from us. Eider down is collected from the nests of the females during and shortly after the nesting period. The down is removed from the nests sympathetically, always leaving the majority for the insulation of the eggs. After the chicks fledge and the adults and young return to the sea, the remaining down is also collected. It is collected by experienced local people who manage the colony to ensure its survival and growth.
Once our eiderdown has been cleaned it is made into duvets by local craftsmen and women, which directly supports the local economy. The duvets are labelled with the Skalanes reserve logo and the washing and handling instructions. They contain 100% eiderdown, only from the Eider duck colony at Skalanes. As there are no intermediaries in the sale of this product, all the proceeds contribute to the continuation of this sustainable practice, while the price of our duvets is favourable in comparison to buying similar products elsewhere. Due to the nature of our limited output, you can also order eiderdown duvets in custom sizes from us at no extra cost. If you would like to purchase a Skalanes eiderdown duvet, please contact us for further information.
