Winter stay at Skalanes
From the end of September until the beginning of May Skalanes is open for guests that want to get away from it all and experience the peace and tranquility of the off-peak season in a remote part of Iceland. As the wildlife changes pace, you can see the fresh tracks of arctic fox in the snow, ptarmigans and snow buntings that chase the snow line in the mountains and the reindeer grazing high until the late winter, when the snow forces them lower down.
The house is fully insulated, has central heating along with a fireplace, and a sauna and hot tub on the deck, so you can enjoy its cozy warmth and comfort after a bracing walk in the Icelandic wilderness. It is the perfect location for a romantic winter honeymoon, or a family Christmas holiday. From late December the road becomes impassable for anything but ski-doos and specially equipped 4-wheel drives with high clearance, so if you want to have the whole place exclusively to yourself, then this is the time to come!
A time spent at Skalanes during the winter months is ideal for relaxation, studying or working on a project, as you will be undisturbed in this quiet and comfortable environment. The beauty of the landscape can provide ample inspiration for a residential artist, writer, composer or poet. It is the ideal location for groups to come, for example, for wildlife photography workshops or a meditation retreat. Or for something more active there is plenty of opportunity for cross-country skiing and mountain trekking. A stay at Skalanes at this time of year combines an exciting adventure with a stay at this very peaceful, beautiful place, making a winter visit a highly rewarding, once in a lifetime experience.
